Help with relocation

Hi all, I’ve been a long time lurker but finally thought I should ask for some help.

Having spent over three years fighting against false allegations and finally gaining a CAO that appears to be working, I am hoping to get some advice about renting a property near to where my son lives with his mother in our former home. My son is eleven and will be staying with me every other weekend and half the school holidays.

Without going into too much detail my quandary at the moment is whether to get somewhere near to home which is not quite so nice or get somewhere about half an hour away which is bigger and more akin to our home.

My thought is if I am too close to home and in a place that is obviously not as good my son will have little incentive to stay with me. Hopefully a bigger, more modern home will help him feel more comfortable and make the transition to overnights a little easier. I am fully expecting to get all sorts of complaints from his mother when he lives with me which I will deal with as and when they arise but what sort of objections can I expect if I rent a flat rather than a house? Obviously I’d prefer a house but doubt my budget will stretch quite that far.

I’d be grateful for any thoughts.

I'd go with the nicer one half an hour a way. A few reasons. Half an hour isn't that far away and if you live too close the Mother may get really pee'd off. Sometimes a little bit of distance can help. So you don't keep going to the same shops, cafe's etc. Plus if you can get a better home half an hour away it's worth it. Having said that, how far away is it from his school? Assume the secondary school has been decided on? Max journey time to school should be no more than 45 mins.
